دین و روان شناسى با این که ممکن است چنین به نظر آید که دو قلمرو متفاوت و جداى از هم مى باشند, ولى هم تاریخ طولانى مشترک با هم دارند و هم موضوعات و مسائلشان مشترک و واحداند. موضوع هر دوى آنها انسان بوده و هدف و غایت هر دو سلامت, سعادت و فلاح و رستگارى انسان است (Van Leeowen, 1984). و هر دو براى رسیدن به این فلاح و رستگارى دستورالعمل صادر کرده و تجویزاتى را توصیه مى کنند (Adams, 1976). تاریخ دین, مطمئناً به اندازه خود بشر قدمت دارد; در حالى که روان شناسى معاصر پدیده نسبتاً جدیدى است (Lundin, 1972). این نوشتار, ریشه هاى روان شناسى را در دین, و ظهور آن را به عنوان یک رشته اصلى مجزاى از دین بررسى کرده و درباره رابطه مناسب بین این دو, یعنى روان شناسى و دین به ویژه دین اسلام, پیشنهادهایى را مطرح مى کند.
