مفهوم «توانایی» و راهکار شرطی مور

چکیده

عبارتِ فاعل از «توانایی انجام فعل به‌گونۀ دیگر» برخوردار است، به چه معناست؟ مباحث بسیاری در فلسفه معاصر درباره معنای این عبارت مطرح شده است. جی ای مور در کتاب اخلاق استدلال کرده است که فاعل از توانایی انجام فعل به‌گونۀ دیگر برخوردار است تنها اگر به‌گونۀ دیگر انتخاب کرده باشد. نخستین‌بار آستین ردیّه‌ای بر تحلیل شرطی مور نگاشته و معتقد شد که دسته‌ای از جملات با ظاهر شرطی اگر-آن‌گاه به‌معنای واقعی شرطیه محسوب نمی‌شوند؛ مثل این گزاره که «می‌توانستم به‌گونۀ دیگر عمل کنم اگر آن‌گونه می‌خواستم». پس از او، چیزم و لرر تلاش کرده‌اند هرگونه تحلیل شرطی از عبارت «S می‌تواند X را انجام دهد» را رد کنند. به نظر آنها گزاره‌هایی با قالبِ «اگر C محقق باشد، S عمل X را انجام خواهد داد «با گزارۀ S» می‌تواند عمل X را انجام دهد» هم‌معنا نیست. بروس آون معادلۀ بالا را معادله‌ای درست می‌داند و معتقد است که استدلال چیزم و لرر حاوی نوعی مصادره به مطلوب است. در این مقاله ضمن مروری بر این بحث، مدعای دو طرف را بررسی کرده و خواهم گفت که اشکال‌های بروس آون قانع‌کننده نیستند.

What it means to say that “agents have the ability to do otherwise”? There has been much debate in recent moral philosophy about the meaning of this notion. G. E. Moore argued that one could do otherwise, only if one had chosen to do otherwise. For the first time, Austin rejected the conditional analysis, and provided a decisive refutation of it. He argued that some "if-then" sentences, such as "I could have done otherwise if I had wanted to”, are not genuinely conditional propositions. Later, Chisholm and Lehrer attempted to refute any analysis of ‘S can do X’ in terms of a conditional. They have argued that "If C, then S X's" cannot mean "s can X."  Bruce Aune objected to Lehrer’s argument. He argued that the above equivalence is true, and their argument is question-begging. In this paper, I present an overview of the debate and try to show that Aune’s objections are unsatisfactory.
