In the confessional approach to comparative theology, comparison with another religious tradition is employed as a means of attaining a deeper understanding of the home tradition while preserving the boundaries of its orthodoxy and orthopraxy. At first glance, this approach seems to confront a fundamental challenge: the tension between openness toward the other religion and commitment to the home tradition. This initial tension, understood as an epistemic problem, constitutes the central question of this study: How, in Islamic comparative theology, can commitment to the home tradition be maintained while exercising openness toward another religious tradition? This research employs a descriptive–analytical method. The findings indicate, first, that in the literature of confessional comparative theology, conceived as a faith-based discipline, “truth” refers to that which accords with, or is grounded in, the revelation found within the home religious tradition; through comparison, the comparative theologian seeks to achieve a deeper grasp of the truth and normativity of the home tradition. Second, the scope of commitment to the home tradition is confined to the norma normans and the norma normata. Beyond these primary and secondary norms lies a broad sphere of discretionary openness. Accordingly, the relationship between the domains of openness and commitment is one of mutual exclusivity: the two domains do not overlap, and thus openness does not undermine commitment.
