In epistemology, Plantinga, by distinguishing between justification and assurance and criticizing traditional foundationalism, proposes an epistemological model in which religious beliefs can be considered as basic and assured beliefs, provided that they are used in the context of correct epistemological functioning. Meanwhile, the assurance theory, relying on the correct functioning of the cognitive system designed by God, has faced criticism from virtue-oriented and social epistemological approaches. This article, with an analytical-critical approach and with the aim of examining the foundations of this view and its relationship with recent epistemological developments, evaluates the possibility of reconstructing or criticizing it in the light of the epistemic virtues and social contexts of religious belief. By rereading the assurance theory, the present article analyzes neglected elements such as reflexivity, epistemic virtues, social contextuality, and epistemic responsibility. The result is that reconstructing the assurance model in the form of a combined model, utilizing the virtueism of Sousa and Zagzbeski as well as Fricker's social epistemology, can provide a more coherent and responsive framework for explaining the rationality of religious belief. Adding virtue-based elements such as humility, honesty, and epistemic courage, along with social considerations such as epistemic justice, can lead to the reconstruction of a more comprehensive theory.
