The Theory of Human Vicegerency claims that the concept of "vicegerent" in verse 30 of Surah Al-Baqarah is not limited to specific individuals but is instead ascribed to the essence of humanity. According to this view, every individual, to the extent they progress on the correct path of belief, ethics, and action, actualizes the divine names within themselves, manifesting vicegerency in varying degrees—weak, moderate, or complete. However, the question arises: On what evidence is this lofty status generalized to all of humanity, and do these evidences possess the necessary rigor and support from religious texts?
The significance of addressing this issue lies in the fact that this theory universalizes the exclusive status of divine vicegerency and representation, even attributing it potentially to disbelievers, polytheists, and corrupt individuals, while considering believers, under certain conditions, as actual vicegerents.
This study adopts an analytical-critical approach to examine the evidences supporting this theory and concludes that the presented arguments lack sufficient strength and are inconsistent with Quranic verses and narrations. Therefore, humanity as a whole cannot be considered the manifestation of divine vicegerency. Instead, the theory of the vicegerency of divine proofs (hujjah) aligns more closely with religious texts, reason, and logic.
