Many attempts have been made among thinkers to explain the signified knowledge of the cognitive function of the intellect, but explaining the process of signified knowledge with respect to verses and narrations has received less attention. Based on the sources of revelation, the knowledge of a verse begins with the senses. When the senses encounter a verse, which is usually an external phenomenon or event, they perceive its external truth. Then the intellect begins to abstract knowledge from the external event. At this stage, the understanding of the verse as a sign and its signification of something else occurs. The intellect can reach the signified in three ways. One is that the signifieds exist as a priori given knowledge in the intellect. Second, the signified implications are obtained from the interaction between the intellect and the heart. The signifieds of signs are the same innate knowledge of the heart that is often in darkness. When a person encounters verses, the intellect shines its light in the heart and these knowledges, which are in fact statements of belief, become clear. Third, reason uses the method of conceptual metaphors to produce signified propositions.
