Religious language, which is one of the most important issues in contemporary philosophy of religion, emerged due to the reaction to the logical positivism. One of the approaches in religious language is non-cognitivism which claims that religious proposition aren’t factual. D.Z.Phillips is an eminent non-cognitivist philosopher who says human activities have got different spheres which must be understood within themselves. Thus the task of philosophy of religion is not to prove religious propositions but it merely illuminates concepts of religion. He maintains that question about the factual reality of God is mistaken and God is only a picture. His philosophy has faced some criticisms. The first criticism is that we can’t both believe in his philosophy and be a real theist. A believer can’t communicate with a God who is merely a picture. Sociologically his approach has been criticized in two respects: 1. If there were no common sphere, it would be impossible to understand other cultures and religions. 2. The substitution of one school for another school indicates there are interactive systems of belief and they aren’t completely separated from each other. Furthermore he imposes his analysis on religious propositions and doesn’t describe them. That’s why his analysis is doomed to failure. Although he attempts to make religious propositions free from positivist’s criterion, in the end he is trapped in positivism’s criterions. Therefore we can call him a positivist philosopher.
