Eclipse of Narrative: The Historical Journey of the Crisis of Biblical Authority in Christian Theology

The Holy Bible, as the cornerstone of Christian faith and theology, has always enjoyed an elevated status; however, in the modern world, trust in it as a credible source for faith and practice has faced a profound and pervasive crisis that now affects ordinary believers as well. The prevailing narrative largely attributes this crisis of authority to external critiques from the Enlightenment, rationalism, critical historiography, and modern science—as if the Bible previously resided in an impregnable fortress and was weakened solely by external attacks. While capturing part of the truth, this explanation overlooks the internal dynamics and developments within the Christian theological tradition that paved the way for this vulnerability.
The main problem of this research is how the historical evolution of understanding biblical authority within Christian theology laid the groundwork for the modern hermeneutical crisis. More precisely, the question is how the transition from a "functional-narrative" understanding in the patristic era to a "propositional understanding based on technical inerrancy" in Protestant scholastic theology led to a phenomenon Hans Frei terms the "eclipse of biblical narrative." The article's hypothesis is that this transition played a foundational role in two ways: first, by defining authority on the basis of technical precision, it rendered the text severely vulnerable to modern historical criticism; second, by prioritizing "historical truth" over "the meaning of the narrative itself," it laid the foundation for a hermeneutical crisis.
The present research has been conducted using a historical-analytical method and the approach of intellectual historiography. Data were gathered from two categories of sources. The first category comprises primary sources, including the works of the Church Fathers (especially Augustine), scholastic theologians (such as Peter Lombard and Thomas Aquinas), and Protestant reformers and theologians (such as Luther, Calvin, and Turretin). The second category consists of secondary sources, including critical analyses by historians of Protestant theology such as Jack Rogers and Donald McKim, works by their primary critic John Woodbridge, and the views of hermeneutical theorists such as Brevard Childs, Kevin Vanhoozer, and N. T. Wright. The theoretical framework of the analysis is drawn from Hans Frei’s book The Eclipse of Biblical Narrative and rests upon three fundamental concepts: the distinction between "meaning" and "reference," the "reversal of the direction of interpretation," and the "confusion between truth-likeness (historicity) and actual history." The historical evolution of the concept of authority is examined across three distinct periods: the patristic era, medieval scholasticism, and Protestant scholasticism (from the seventeenth century to the Princeton School in the nineteenth century). In each period, the mode of understanding authority, the place of narrative, and its hermeneutical consequences are evaluated.
The purpose of this research is to reread the roots of the modern crisis of biblical authority from the perspective of internal developments within Christian theology and to complement the prevailing narrative focused solely on external critique. The article attempts to show that the modern crisis is not a sudden rupture, but rather the culmination of a gradual process of paradigm shift in biblical hermeneutics. It also seeks to clarify how defining authority on the basis of propositional inerrancy and technical precision made the Bible vulnerable to historical criticism and how it generated the reciprocal reactions of liberalism and fundamentalism. The ultimate goal is to present a horizon for overcoming this crisis through the recovery of a narrative understanding of the Bible, without this recovery implying a simplistic return to pre-critical interpretation.
The research findings confirm the main hypothesis. First, in the patristic era, authority was a functional-relational concept understood within the interaction of the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit, the context of the ecclesial community, and the salvific end of the text. The biblical narrative shaped the believer's real world, "narrative meaning" took precedence over "historical truth," and the concept of "divine accommodation" allowed the human, cultural, and scientific dimensions of the text to be accepted without threatening its authority. Inerrancy was also primarily a moral category rather than technical precision.
Second, medieval scholastic theology, through systematization, the elevation of theology to a "science," and an emphasis on logical coherence, shifted the focus from the overarching story to the extraction and harmonization of propositions. The absolute authority of the text remained accepted, but in practice, it was tied to the exclusive interpretive authority of the Church, providing the groundwork for non-narrative approaches.
Third, in the Protestant scholastic period, two simultaneous challenges marked a turning point: the need for an objective basis for authority after discarding Catholic interpretive authority in light of the principle of sola scriptura, and the need for "certainty" in the rationalist atmosphere of the seventeenth century. Authority, which previously resided in the text's salvific function, came to be equated with "absolute inerrancy in all scientific, historical, and geographical details," reaching its peak in the Princeton School.
The analysis based on Frei shows that this transition had three main consequences. First, the direction of interpretation was reversed, and the modern world, instead of the biblical narrative, became the arbiter of the text's credibility. Second, meaning-bearing truth-likeness was reduced to the issue of historical truth, and narrative meaning was overshadowed by disputes over reference. Third, the Bible became more vulnerable to modern innovation than ever before, such that any apparent inconsistency was treated as a threat to the entire edifice of authority, and conservative theologians were forced into tactical retreats, including a refuge in error-free "original autographs." Liberalism and fundamentalism were both victims of this "eclipse" and remained trapped within the framework defined by modernity—namely, the priority of historical truth over narrative meaning: one by abandoning history in favor of subjective meaning, and the other by abandoning narrative meaning in favor of dogmatic historicism.
In conclusion, the article argues that the way forward lies neither in defending the propositional model nor in abandoning the concept of authority, but rather in recovering a narrative understanding of the Bible—a path pursued in various ways in the works of Barth, Childs, and Wright.
