Abstract

This study examines Seyyed Hossein Nasr's views on the issue of recognizing religious minorities. Recognition is a human necessity; its absence hinders diverse groups from accessing citizens' economic and political benefits. This concept, which holds a central place in contemporary definitions of social justice, fundamentally influences the acceptance or exclusion of different groups. In reviewing Nasr’s works, questions arise regarding his perspective on the religious minorities’ right to recognition. According to Nasr, a broad range of religious adherents possess favorable cultural and social status, and most religious minorities residing in the Islamic world enjoy essential elements of recognition. However, Nasr's thought does not explicitly affirm equal rights for followers of all religions, leaving the theoretical resolution of this issue to Muslim thinkers, despite emphasizing the importance of universal human rights. This article draws on Charles Taylor’s theories in refining the concept of recognition and employs the Oxford interpretive model as its methodological approach.
