Soul-Body Relationship in the Views of Descartes and Merleau-Ponty

Abstract

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, the French existentialist and phenomenologist, tries to bridge the gap between the soul and the body which was created in Descartes’s philosophy. Thus, he provides a new method for the description of the human experience in the world, and instead of reliance on ideas, he offers a phenomenology of perception. In his Phenomenology of Perception, where he is greatly influenced by Descartes’s Meditations, he tries hard to solve predicaments faced by rationalists and empiricists in this regard. According to Merleau-Ponty, phenomenal perception is bodily, rather than a mental event. For him, we are bodily perceivers. The body is the human situation in the world, the human viewpoint to the world, and our anchor in the world. Merleau-Ponty rejects the Cartesian distinction about the soul and body and the mechanical world. In this paper, we identify points of agreement and disagreement between Merleau-Ponty’s and Descartes’s views of the soul-body problem, and then examine the principality of the body in Merleau-Ponty’s thought and the principality of soul in Descartes’s view, and thus, we portray a general picture of their views of the soul. We conclude that both philosophers were unsuccessful in their respective accounts of the soul-body relationship.
